Unesco world heritage cider! We pick apples at #werkaandegroeneweg near @forthonswijk.nl .
Last year's cider from this orchard was the best 100% apple cider we ever made. Full of tannins, it shows that old trees make for the best cider.
The orchard was planted in 1930-1940 as a camouflage orchard to hide the defense line for enemy planes. It protects the @nieuwehollandsewaterlinie as a forward post. It consists of bunkers, trenches, lakes, all hidden by the orchard. Varieties here are Belle de Boskoop, Sterappel and Ananasreinette.
The trees are so big that we spend a whole day on ladders for just a small batch. But it's definitely worth it!
The trees need maintenance though. With 80 years, many are collapsing. We'll use 25% of the revenue of this cider for the maintenance of the orchard, that's owned by @staatsbosbeheer

Bottle directly from cidery. Color: Lightly hazy golden, no head. Aroma: Rural funk, apple, apple peel. Taste: Moderate tart, subtle rural and horse manure funk, hints of leather, subtle fruity apple, apple peel. Wood notes. Quite a lot of tannins Light to moderate bitterness. Dry finish. Just below medium body, no carbonation. Nice.
