This is a strong brown ale in a loosely historical style, inspired by the 1917 recipe for out Stout, Valour. Brown malt is usually used as an accent in modern brewing, at 5-10% of the grain bill; we went for a nice 30%, which gives it a rather rich and distinctive heft and depth.

Bottle thanks to Stuu666. Appearance - deep brown and opaque. Thin off-white head. Nose - big dark chocolate note, with raisins going into prunes in Armagnac. Taste - dark chocolate, very rich, raisin and prunes. Burnt wood and booze. Palate - full bodied, creamy texture, dry woody and boozy finish. Overall - good.

330ml bottle; bottled Apr 2021; BB Jun 2028. Pours a very dark brown with a huge beige head quickly dissipating to a normal level. Aroma of dark malts, dried fruits, chocolate, mild spice/herb. Taste is rich, dark malts, dried fruits, caramel, treacle, nutty, chocolate, warming booze throughout. Medium bodied. Tastes a lot stronger than 10% but it's a bloody good brown ale nonetheless. 2 and a half years on it... should've got another bottle to have in a few years time.

Bottle from the House of Trembling Madness; my first impy brown. Dark brown with a barely-there beige head and a light fizz. Boozy chocolate aroma. Alcohol to the fore on tasting too, with more chocolate, wood toffee and a bit of Dundee cake. Good full body. Big and boozy - a little one-dimensional maybe, but enjoyable nevertheless.

Bottle ordered from A Hoppy Place, Windsor. Aroma combines booze, a dark ganache and liquorice. Dark. Consumes the light. Thin foamy beige head. Medium bitter. But the booze is up front. Dark chocolate, coffee and liquorice. An smoky almost salt tinged streak. As I drink more caramel begins to cone through. But, yeah, it's boozy. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Sticky. Fizzy carbonation. Long astringent finish. Enjoyable, although it's big Dark and boozy. The Brown Ale element is an afterthought to an extent
