Tony Wilson once said: “This is Manchester, we do things differently here”. And he was right. Our refreshingly Mancunian pale ale gives ale lovers a similar hop-packed offering to its American equivalents. It's a golden ale that’s made entirely from all-British malt, Liberty and Mount Hood hops. It’s a post-industrial Manchester classic (as Wilson might have put it).

Pale brown colour. Aroma has a touch of apple and grass. Balanced malty flavour with a light bitter finish.

Cask at the very isolated Turnpike Inn, at Rishworth. Golden with a thick creamy head. Has peach and grapefruit tastes with a lasting bitterness. Some biscuit involved too. Retried at the Boat & Horses in Chadderton in 2025.

Cask pint in La Cracke, Liverpool on 7th Feb 2014. Dry golden ale with a white foaming head. How can anything from Manchester be dry: a fine oxymoron if ever I’ve heard one. Anyway this is a pleasant enough blend of hops and malts with the hops just about winning the flavour stakes in both the nose and taste. Easy session beer with enough about it to have another and another: I couldn’t as I was on a mission to drink different beers that particular evening.

Cask at the Grouse Inn, Carrog, Denbighshire. Pale amber with a thick white head. Smooth with a light citrus flavour. If you want a light refreshing beer to knock back quickly and satiate your hunger and thirst after a particularly taxing day of hill bagging, this is pretty much bang on. Maybe not one for sitting and sipping and savouring the flavour (because there isn’t much), but it did the job I needed it to do and did it well!
