Two breweries with a passion for barrel-aging beer walk into a bar...have you heard this one before? No?

Okay, so, the bar was The Magnet, Vancouver's best beer bar, but the bartender there was a bit of a rock star when it came to cocktails. So we started talking about mezcal old fashioneds, and we decided to barrel-age a beer with a lot of the same flavour notes.

This beer is really cool. Thanks to our pals Tristan Stewart at Temporal and Rob Scope at Magnet for Helping us make it happen.

Ingredients: Barley, triticale, oats, agave nectar, hops, yeast, orange peel, cacao nibs, salt

Hazy, amber, but dull. Fuck me you know I love that smokey nose…it’s not even a mezcal smoke, more like hickory or mesquite. On the palate the smoke is bright and everything else is kind of murky…maybe orange, some sticky sort of malts, yeastiness. The smoke does linger throughout.,

Poured from the tap @ Dageraad. Lightly hazed amber orange with minimal white head. Earthy clay mezcal with feint smoke, some brett tartness in the background, touch of bitter orange peel with some background agave. Not totally integrated, but decent concept, the layers sit well as you sip over time. Perhaps slightly too earthy clay mezcal like — which is a definite choice.

375 ml bottle. Pours a mahogany colour with no head. Aromas of wood, mashed stoned fruit, grape must, and toasted malts. Flavours of oak, grapes (though maybe agave), tart mashed fruit and soft rye/malts. Nailed the cocktail flavors although obviously malty. Good.

100ml. Appearance: almost clear golden with a white head. Aroma: mescal, woody notes, tannins, some tartness and smokiness. Taste: along the same lines, citrusy notes, some mescal and farmhouse notes. Overall: weird, but not bad.

Draught at the brewery
Dull amber colour, cloudy; it wasn't clear at the bar why this is darker than the others. Gentle fruit in the aroma, and, knowing about the Mezcal, light smoke. Good body strength, and surely some alcohol warmth as well; coriander, white pepper, some Brett, pear, strong spirit with Mezcal accents. Bold, although, like many BA Dageraad beers, not refined.

100mL pour at brewery. Pours mostly clear dark orange with white head. Aroma has a bunch of mezcal up front; has a window cleaner character. Flavour also has a distinct window cleaner thing going on, mezcal, some bitter orange peel. This is not really working for me.

On tap at Dageraad, pours a cloudy dark orange amber with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out bitter orange peel, some mezcal, and a hint of cacao. Flavour is strange, with plenty of mezcal, some bitter citrus, some mixed bugs, and gentle tartness. Bizarre - not what I was expecting given the ingredients and concept. Puzzling flavour profile that doesn't seem to be the sum of its parts. It's alright but doesn't seem to accomplish what it set out to do.
