Strong Belgian-style Golden Ale Aged in Sauternes Wine Barrels
Sauternes is a legendary sweet wine from Bordeaux made from grapes partially desiccated by a fungus called botyritis, also called 'the noble rot'. We though it would be a good pairing for Anno 2023.

Dullish pale, thick head. Tart, some vague sense of bugs but neither the brett nor the botrytis stand out…the base malt is okay, not as bright as their usual excellence. I am wondering if sauternes barrel blonde might be a better call, given the cleaner profile of the base.

Poured from the tap @ Dageraad. Hazy gold with white head. Tart, Belgian yeast, mild Sauternes character on the underlay, decent.

100ml. Appearance: hazy golden with a white head. Aroma: like a strong Belgian saison. Taste: bold, oak, some spices. Finishes with some bitterness, Belgian yeasts, oak notes. Overall: pretty good.

Draught at the brewery
Cloudy blond colour. It has the nose of other Dageraad strong ales, with a bit of fennel and plastic; and white grapes, but blindly I wouldn't guess Sauternes. Good body, moderately sweet; fruity character, also from the fermentation, but probably more from the barrel; some acidity, some Brett astringency; it's bold, and warming. On paper I expected something more elegant. Instead it's rather chaotic. Weird, but interesting.

100mL pour at brewery. Pours slightly hazy blonde with white head. Aroma has coriander, sauterne. Flavour has tons of sauternes, coriander, and a fair amount of esters. A touch too hard on the esters, but generally pretty good.

On tap at Dageraad, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma has lots of the sweet white wine barrels, mixed bugs, and estery Belgian yeast. Flavour is somewhat estery, bringing out the Belgian yeast upfront, with gentle brett, and then tons of the Sauternes. Quite vinous and sweet, finishing estery and tangy. Good stuff but a bit too estery.
