Much like how former Small Gods Storyteller Series reader David Ly’s first poetry chapbook, Stubble Burn, laid a foundation for his later works, the classic West Coast IPA laid the foundations for modern hop-forward beers. Clean and clear, this IPA has a beautiful base to showcase the Pacific Northwest-grown hops Citra, Cascade, and Simcoe.

473ml can. Pours a clear gold with a large, foamy, long lasting, white head that leaves thick curtains of lace. Sweet fruity aroma of grainy pale malt, grapefruit, peach and weedy hops. Sweet fruity flavour of grainy pale malt, passionfruit, cantaloupe and piney hops in a dry, mild bitter finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty and easy to drink.

Gold, with a chill haze. Thin head. Citrusy, tobaccoey hop nose. Big pale malt, hops get weedy, light alcohol in the finish. Medium bitterness. Well-balanced, the malt character works well. The hops are decent, though not my preferred blend for this base. I'm thinking CTZ and some of that Michigan-grown Centennial. Maybe a little neomexicanus something, too. So structurally it's fantastic, but expression isn't necessarily to my taste.

Re-rate: poured from the tap @ Small Gods. Similar as previous rating, but the hops pop a lot more with nice citrus notes. Deserved a re-rate, especially because Darbys can sometimes be questionable pours depending on who’s working that day. Increased rating to 3.5. Oct 1, 2023 (7/3/7/3/13=3.3): Poured from the tap @ Darbys. Clear blonde gold with small white head. Biscuit malt, lightly dank and oily, okay.

On tap at Darby's, pours a clear pale copper blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out earthy hops, some sweatiness, light dank oiliness. Flavour has an unusual hop expression, with bitter herbal hops, some pine, and crisp biscuity malt. Finishes herbal, sweaty and bitter. Not the most vibrant or cohesive hop expression, but reasonably made structurally. Decent.
