Lucky Lager was created in 1934 in San Francisco, California by the General Brewing Company, founded by Eugene Selvage. At the same time, Lucky formed a strategic partnership with Coast Breweries in Vancouver, Canada, and granted them the Canadian rights to the product. In 1958, Coast Breweries was purchased by Labatt Brewery. In 1971, Paul Kalmonovitz purchased the General Brewing Company, and when he later purchased Pabst Brewing in 1985, Lucky became a subsidiary of Pabst. Meanwhile in Canada, Labatt was purchased by Interbrew in 1995, which later became InBev when it merged with AmBev in 2004. In 2008, InBev purchased Anheuser-Busch to become Anheuser-Busch InBev, which still produces Lucky in Canada. In the United States, Lucky was discontinued in the early 2000s, but it had a brief revival in San Francisco with production support for Pabst by 21st Amendment in 2019 and 2020.

Poured from the tap. Clear pale blonde with small white head. Bland straw malt. Not much else going on here. Boring waste of time and money (even with happy hour price).

355ml can. Pours a crystal clear pale gold with a small, fizzy, short lived, off-white head that leaves spotty lacing. Faint aroma of grainy malt, corn and cardboard. Sweet flavour of grainy malt, corn, nail polish remover and slightly skunky hops. Light body with a thin, watery texture and average carbonation. Used to crush these in my underage drinking days. Lucky for me this was my last ever. Even for a macro, this was nasty.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours Clear bright gold with a large white head. Bready aroma; hint of spice. Near med body. Flavor is bready with enough Noble spice to notice. More bitter than many pale lagers. I call it better than Corona.

355mL can, pours a clear pale yellow with a small white head. Nose is typical swill, with straw and cereal malts. Flavour is pretty uninteresting, with straw and cereal notes. Weak and watery. Typical swill.

Just because I’m on the Island! On tap. Pours a clear gold with moderate head. Aromas of corn sugar and grain. Flavors of same plus chewy malts. Maybe because it’s fresh and on tap - it’s not as bad as others rate. Can’t say it’s very inspiring tho... Definitely a pounder for after a round of golf on a hot day...

I’d been eyeing this one at the liquor store for awhile, wondering (or perhaps dreading) what this cheap lager may taste like in comparison to the oodles of other cheap lagers I’ve tried around the world. It pours with a slightly creamy but rather crappy head and heavily carbonated body. Aroma is all corn sweetness, not overbearing or disgusting however. Flavour is soft caramel leaning slightly into cardboard territory with a dry finish. While certainly not great, this is not in the drainpour category and probably isn’t too bad an option for a cheap back porch brew that can be downed by the dozen.

Had the pleasure of revisiting this at a bar in Victoria on Monday. Thanks for reminding me of the rancid think you guys do with water and have the audacity to name beer. It reminds me of my misguided youth and makes me want to run outside and see if there are any election signs to steal or fences to jump in seek of midnight trampoline jaunts. I’m feeling lucky. Are you, punk?

Originally rated May 2005. Says on the can that this brew is inspired by an original California recipe. Pours a pale golden colour with a fizzy white head. Quickly dissapears and no trace of lace. Carbonation is crazy like ginger ale soda with big bubbles at the bottom of the glass and very active. Even the head going down does the sound of the ginger drink after pouring. Fzzzzzz. Aromas of malt seems normal. Not much in the taste. Just light malt in the background. Perrier water mouthfeel. Refreshing for students and their bank account... but horrible for people looking for a beer. Just not there.
