[Had this on tap as Rogue Anniversary Alt at The Brickskeller prior to the RBSG 2006 - and since others visiting the Brickskeller around that time have placed their ratings here - I do the same] A hazy nut brown beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet and somewhat nutty. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel and nuts - and it is quite carbonated.

On tap @ Mellow Mushroom. Clear amber color with white head. Aroma is both sweet malt and some earthy-grassy hops. Wow, an alt beer with substantial hop character. Pretty good. The little bit of sweeter hop flavors and caramel malts are over shadowed by the pure hop bitterness. Seems like an Alt ESB. I like it.

On tap at Barley’s Knoxville as part of John’s Locker Stock Series. Fairly clear brown with a thin soapy head. Malty toasted aroma. The overall flavor is bitter with an underlying sweetness that nevr breaks through. Dry in the finish. Decent beer although a bit one dimensional.

Draught pint at Redbones on 7/3/06. Ruddy, strawberry-copper colored beer with some light chocolate brown tones and a medium clarity. Light beige head is small, but well-retained, eventually fading to cover and leaving little lacing. Not a shabby draught appearance at all, but for Rogue, it’s actually subpar. Soily, nutty, dirty (in an earthy sense, not unclean) and hoppy, it certainly smells the part. No PNW high Alpha hop stench is encouraging, while a subtle toastiness just slightly cuts through the leafy, mossy, herbal hops. Some buttercream-like malt sugariness and very clean yeast (due to the use of pacman) round out the finish, while hops linger on. Medium-high strength of aroma, no alcohol noted. Taking a sip, the mouthfeel actually seems a little on the light side for Rogue. A touch watery on the end, though it is just a low/mid gravity alt. But the flavor is packed with hops, bitter, quite so, but yet no grapefruit and pine here (I had not read the hop profile when having the beer). A touch of breadiness softly builds up, keeping things lightly dry, as the bitterness pushes things towards a very lean, nearly too much so, level. But as the liquid washes down the throat, some light caramel malt sugars and soft pils malt honey notes soften the ever oppressive dryness and things come out quite balanced (though tending quite hoppy and rather bitter). Well-made, (obviously, being from Rogue). Dosent do it for me personally, as I can’t stand spalt or crystal hops, but it certainly is packed with malts, well attenuated and not overdone (I don’t see a boatload of fresh, to-style hops as overdoing it). It just appeals to those who enjoy a hoppy alt. Tightening up the mouthfeel would prove very advantageous here.
