This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a gentle hazy burnt yellow color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated nicely. Thin lacing starts and slides into the beer.
The smell starts off with some sweet crisp lemony hops. Light sweet and sour grapes. Delicate vinous qualities. Subdued yeast, can’t tell if its Belgian or champagne, hmmm...I know Mystic tends to use their house yeast but somehow the aromatics of this one seems a bit combined - very nice.
The taste leaned towards the sweeter lemon crisp hops than the Belgian or even champagne yeasty qualities. Wet sweet lemon aftertaste. Quick wet finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fantastic sessionable quality about it. Carbonation runs fairly light. Sweetness hits appropriately, nothing off or overly penetrating.
Overall, a knockout of a saison by Mystic, perhaps one of my favorites even with the vinous quality surrounding it. Would be perfect with some black & bleu cheese encrusted steaks!

750 ml bottle, purchased at Kappy’s liqueurs Danvers. Ok, bottle date of 12-11-14. I guess this was hidden in the back room someplace because I was at this Kappy’s only a month ago and it wasn’t on the shelf. Anyhow... Slight hazy gold without any head. Aroma is pale grain, old fruit and slightly sour wheat.

This displays a huge sweetness, honey, caramel and sweet grain and corn like hints. The mouthfeel is nearly flat. For some reason it didn’t really carb up. The mouthfeel and sweetness doesn’t really work for me but is not undrinkable. Lightly cloying and really needs carbonation. Slightly below average.

750mL bottled 12/11/14, drunk 8/18/15.
Well, not really drunk so much as poured out. Yikes, what the hell happened here? I think there is a new batch out so that explains the better ratings here, but my bottle was undrinkable, which is odd as it says you can let it sit for a while to have it develop some acidity. I picked it up at Liquor World in Porter Square recently, so maybe it just sat on the shelf since January or whenever it was released? Problem being, it tastes AWFUL. Seven months of shelf time does not account for this mess. If you’ve ever seen/had apple cider vinegar, there’s a drink that is pretty good where you pour some Bragg’s cider vingegar in to sparkling water. Well, this tastes exactly like that. No beer character, cidery as all hell, completely fermented with no maltiness remaining whatsoever and odd corn and banana notes to boot. While I didn’t pour out Vinland 2 or 3, they weren’t very exciting, but this is just miserable. Not sure if I can bring myself to spend the money to buy a newer bottle....maybe....
