Draught at Meadhall, 7/28/16.
Light, auburn-copper color doesn’t look like any dunkel I’ve seen....High clarity and a beige head atop showing moderate retention.
Perhaps this is the pilot amber that is floating around town, mislabeled?? I don’t know, it was very clearly labeled as Pilot Red on the menu and as a Dunkel.
It smells rather bready, with light toasted grains, soft, red fruitiness and a touch of caramel-vanilla maltiness. No roast, no melanoidin, no hazelnut (some of which are usually present in a dunkel). Giving up on this being a dunkel, it smells fine, albeit rather dull. Hops show very light pepper and hints of floral characteristics.
Softly sweet in the mouth with a touch of sourdough-like graininess and some moderate bitterness balancing the malts. Pepper, herbs, caramel, light iced tea and more bread on the finish. No clue what this is or is supposed to be. I guess some sort of amber lager? Carbonation is prickly, body is medium-light, no alcohol or flaw.
