Draught at Meadhall, 7/27/16.
Deep copper-golden with slight auburn hues and a moderately-high clarity. Beige head atop is small and shows moderate to low retention.
Lots of red wine and oak in the nose, primarily oak. Strong toasty-vanilla character with a bit of butteriness and lactic and brett acids behind it. Fruit seems completely faded at this point, if there was indeed fruit in here at one point. Not alcoholic and some people will appreciate the big oakiness, but I don’t care for that at all. Smells more like a toasted oak barrel than a beer.
Similar strong oak dominance in the flavor. While it’s not obnoxiously overdone, I do think it is still too dominant. Behind it, soft wood tannins, light honey-caramel malt notes and mild brett and lactic acids seem well-balanced. Carbonation low but still fairly engaging. Medium body and a good amount of substantial texture. No alcohol or flaw. Light wine notes, wood and toasted oak lingering.
