Draught at the brewery, 5/4/16.
As with all of their gruit-style beers, it shows a lightly murky clarity with an immediately receding head. So they’re not much to look at, but alas herbs/bitter plants and head retention are not good friends. This one is a dark brassy-gold.
Definite Belgian suggestions in the nose show mustiness, vegetal notes and bits of "tart" red fruits. Not intensely bitter plant-like in the nose, thankfully and with lots of earthy/vegetal/belgian characters that contribute to an overall wacky aroma, much like many of their others.
The flavor is surprisingly tart and with light bitterness from the Broom adding to a spoiled milk-like character (not as bad as it sounds, somehow). Honey-caramel mixes in just enough to balance and tart acids and fruitiness lingers. Low carbonation with no flaw. Very musty and earthy, but with a strong tart and bitter component as well. Yep, wacky. But good.
