Pours chalky mahogany tinged dark brown into a shaker. Tan head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Dark caramel, cocoa and espresso aromas. Soft with sweet milk chocolate and mild earth upfront turning crisp in the medium length roasted nuts and espresso bean finish.

Draught at Redbones, 3/12/16.
Ebony with magenta edges and good clarity. Dark beige head atop shows strong retention.
Cola, vanilla, soft chocolatey-roast, light hazelnut and fresh yeast minerality. No alcohol, nor any sign of the lactose, but for maybe the faintest touch of sweet cream and caramel. Very classy, aromatic and restrained nose.
Moderate sweetness in the mouth, shows milk chocolate, hazelnut and vanilla-tinged coffee roast, very fresh, soft and even lightly vegetal (in a good way). Incredibly soft, obviously oat-influenced texture with no syrupy or overly sweet lactose character. Good roasty bitterness on the end balances well, with light minerality/plaster-like character and ample carbonation and light wateriness keeping drinkability high. Like many of Jack’s lagers, really well-executed without any big flavors or flashiness. Taken strictly as a classic schwarzbier, it’s a bit too oily/roasty, but it’s very clearly not a classic schwarzbier (oats, lactose) and it’s still delicious.
