Cask at Deep Ellum, 2/7/16.
Bright copper-caramel body shows a small, off-white head that is poorly retained.
Strong fruitiness, limes, lemons and such, in the nose are joined by caramel and at last by the oak chips. Spicy, buttery and rather rich, they definitely take a lot of the focus off of the hops.
Same goes for the flavor, with a pretty well-done beer, good attenuation and such, a malty texture and vibrant, citrusy hops with light mango and strawberry. But the oak chips slowly and inevitably conquer the palate and by the end of the glass I’m not very inclined to keep drinking. Always a "fun" idea, but you’ve got to ask yourself, "Why are we adding oak chips to a beer that is meant to highlight the intricacies of a single hop....?" I can’t find any good answer. Seems like something Stone would do. Come on, Founders, you’re better than that.
