Draught at the brewery, 1/23/16.
A dark amber-crimson body is significantly hazy, which is a bit odd. A large beige head sits atop with moderate to strong retention.
Dry red fruits in the nose (raspberry, apple, black cherry) work well with the roast and peppery phenols. Light toffee, brown bread and a touch of caramel sit behind it, adding a light sugar balance but still allowing the yeast and roast to interact most prominently. No alcohol or flaws.
Dry immediately, with crusty brown bread, dry raspberry, black pepper and tons of earthiness. Unfortunately, there’s a very bitter, astringent yeast character here that the heavily hazy appearance seems to have alluded to. The sparse sweetness from the full attenuation can’t balance this and while the remainder of the beer is highly enjoyable, with tons of fruitiness and phenol, I’m still left with all of this bitter and bland sediment/yeast character that greatly detracts. Tight carbonation and a slick-to-bready texture with no alcohol noted. Maybe a touch too much on the breadiness and various nearly husky medium malts, but that’s very probably being exacerbated by problems with all of this sediment.

Taster at source hazy amber with a nice tan head. Aromas of pepper funk yeast and grain. Taste is spot on peppery funky crisp and not too much bitterness.

Sampled at Mystic. Unclear Amber with generous amounts of white head in the sample glass. Aroma is rustic grain, yeast and light pepper. The flavor is spot on the aroma with a lot of peppery, spicy yeast that lingers well after the sip. Mouthfeel is zesty with a medium body. Nice character from the yeast.
