Draught at Meadhall, 12/17/15.
Large, light-tan head is medium-sized and shows moderate retention, atop an inky black body of probable opacity.
Big rum notes in the nose are boozey and backed by copious amounts of dark chocolate and caramel character. Heavy spiciness combines with alcohol to certainly balance out the malt, and to that end, possibly goes a bit far. A bit fusel-like (glue and such), with a slight bit of maple character, some lighter vanilla notes and a bit of salty roast.
Massive, again, in the mouth, with heavily drying, spicy, sharp rum flavors, rich, sweet, ultra thick chocolate/fudge maltiness and plentiful alcohol. Whew. Balanced this is not, though I’ve certainly had much, much worse in the barrel aged big beer world. Very thick and chewy, bordering on syrupy, with some excess sweetness, tons of tannic astringency on the finish and more booze. Quite a mess, but some good flavors despite that.
