Draught at Eataly, 2/2/17.
Dark, cola-to-chocolate brown body shows high clarity and a beige-tan head atop that is full and showing moderate to moderately strong retention.
Soft, chocolatey notes fill the nose, with moderate, even, roast notes and hints of gooey fudge, raisin and vanilla. Spices are fully integrated as is any maple or bacon. On the subject of bacon, it’s only just a shade smoked, at best. Light acidity from prune and various other dark fruit notes as well as fruity coffee bean character. It’s all balanced and homogenized expertly and there’s no surplus of malt, alcohol, roast or vinousness.
If the nose was aromatic and well-done, the flavor/texture is even more so. Rich malt and chocolate tones with a fantastic attenuation leaving the beer dry and drinkable. Light char/smoke sits in the background, with just a touch of spice (vanilla, very minimal cinnamon). Milk chocolate, graham cracker, mild, fruity coffee all provide great flavor without any excess bitterness/astringency. Soft malts and low but engaging carbonation make for a comforting texture and the beer ends with just enough bright acidity balancing the malt. Awesome stuff. Funky Buddha always does adjuncts near perfectly and their stouts are very dry. Can’t ask for much more than that.
