750mL bottle #733 of 960, drunk 12/15/17.
Ruddy-amber, good clarity. Light tan head recedes steadily to ring.
Strong black and white pepper phenols in the nose complement the spicy bourbon and long molasses finish. Warming vanilla and alcohol grace the nose, as well without any sharpness or strong toasted character. The barrel is quite forward and while it smells great, the beer character definitely takes a little bit of a back seat.
Soft in the mouth with caramel and toffee-like malt that is well-attenuated. Spicy licorice and pepper with long tannins thorouhly drying out the beer. Fruity, cherry-like finish with more vanilla and dry toffee. Engaging carbonation and a medium to medium-light body overall. Pretty good effort; certainly smells quite rich and robust from the barrel-aging, though the flavor falls a little flat and thin on the finish and the body could use a bit of a bolster.
