Sharp roast and lots of bitter pine. This one is quite bitter. Black pour with decent mocha head and lacing. Bitter finish. Can.

16oz can pours an opaque black with some ringing dark brown head. Nose has burnt toast, some coffee grounds, pine and dried herbs. Flavor has malt, toast, black sesame, coffee grounds, pine and pine needles, herbs and soap, some caramel smoothing things out on the back end. Finishes dry, toasty, roasty and bitter. Reminds you why people like this style.

Draught at Tap 25, 5/26/17.
Black indeed, with an undetermined clarity (though I think not terribly hazy) and a dark beige, medium-sized head showing moderate retention.
Roast and a modestly hoppy character to the nose shows light mineral/house yeast character on the backend and juicy pine and citrus lingering. It’s not intensely roasty, thankfully, and provides a pretty good mix of both base malt and dark malt. Despite the citrus and pine, it doesn’t come off TOO aggressive, either, which is a pretty good feet for a black IPA. Clean and no alcohol noted.
Quite dry, though not too much so, with a fair amount of roasted character and surprisingly juicy hop notes helping to keep it somewhat bright (I guess as bright as a black IPA can be). It’s got low bitterness and fairly engaging carbonation. Moderately fruity with no resin and light chocolate and coffee notes lingering. No alcohol or flaw. Nothing crazy or unique, and very straightforward as usually befits the style, but it’s certainly competent.

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a soft black color with a finger’s worth of white to off white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Sly messy lace.
The aroma had a sharp bitter citrus to resinous hoppiness up front bursting through some gentle roast and coffee bean.
The flavor makes a good effort to blend the hops to the coffee bean, but for the most part, stays separated. Crisp roasted to semi-sweet and bitter aftertaste spiking the finish with a big bitterness.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionable trait to it. As big and bold as the citrus and resinous hops come out, their bitterness level seems to be somewhat tame here, and I’m okay with that. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, an all around well balanced black IPA, though not an official palate wrecker like most I have encountered, this one could would be a nice early Spring time beer.
