As is typical, this blend of Avalonia was pulled from a variety of barrel-aged farmhouse ales exhibiting complimentary qualities that would make it particularly well-suited for a secondary fermentation on whole fruit, in this case, Black Raspberries and Marion Blackberries. This second batch of Avalonia: Black bears those characteristics that made the first so special - distinctive earthy, vinous and spruce-like flavors and aromas. We’re finding this iteration to be a touch more jammy and ripe on the fruit character and it has a remarkably soft and full texture for the style.

Draft: Poured a dark maroon almost black with a reddish purple head. Aroma is funky fruit, blackberry, berry, woodsy. Taste is tart fruity, berry, blackberry, raspberry, funky but very drinkable.

375mL batch 2, bottled 2/22, drunk 8/4/22. Dark cranberry-violet-burgundy. Deep violet-pink head, large and well-retained. Holy shit. Mega-even fruit acids with soft, soft, chalky-tinted barrel character and soft, wheat-like grains. No big, punchy acids, just amazingly juicy fruits, so soft and sniffable. In the mouth it's soft, malty, extremely well-attenuated with juicy fruits, tart acidity and an incredible, milky-lactic character that softens the blow of the fruit and barrel acidity without dampening the brightness. Like a classy pinot noir without all of the alcohol. Mineral, fruit, good acidity, deep textures...just wow.
