We cooked up a crazy scheme to age a German-style Märzen in a series of miscellaneous whiskey and rye barrels. The results? A "big beer" perfectly suited for a "little can;" notes of vanilla and oak create a smooth, complex and balanced brew with subtle flavor hints that will keep you coming back for more. (We're looking at you, big malt full of toffee, caramel, biscuit and bread!) Cheers, to all beers big and small.

Märzen is a nice style for barrel aging - the heavy malt profile compliments and highlights the barrel character nicely. Just the right amount of rye flavor. --- Beer merged from original tick of Barrel-Aged Octoberfest on 26 Sep 2021 at 12:29 - Score: 8. Original review text: Cheers dad, this one is for you. 4 pack cans, best before 5/17/23, last one drunk 3/11/23. Clear, deep amber-rust. Medium-sized, butter-tinted head shows moderate retention. A mix of melanoidin and light bourbon give a pretty rich nose with definite vanilla, light spice and red fruits. Not too heavy on the caramel-toffee, not too sugary it seems, with no alcohol or flaw. Soft, malty, good attenuation with dry toffee, light bourbon and plentiful vanilla and light oxidation. A bit too much specialty malt maybe? I don't know, something is a bit punchy/acidic on the finish and I don't think it's the bourbon. Otherwise well-done.
