Rotbier is a style of lager brewed with special Red barley malt, traditionally in Nürnberg. Similar in colour to a Märzen, but lower alcohol and with a fantastic full malty flavour. This one is 5% ABV, and has a wonderful glowing red colour (if you can find some sunshine to hold it up in!) and a pale tan, foamy head. The beer style fell out of fashion but has recently been revived by several German breweries... and now by us! Our version was hopped with Hallertau Tradition and lagered slowly for 7 weeks in our German 3 bar-rated tanks.

A beer for all of us, including angry women who might just eat the bloody wolf!

Can from The Beerhive. Hazy amber body with a beige head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of caramel, raisin, copper and brown bread. Flavour of toffee, buttered brown bread and an earthy, bitter finish. Medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Light fizz. A rich and nourishing lager, which goes down well on a cold November night. Another great lager from one of my favourite breweries.

Can picked up at the brewery. SMODs first Rotbier, I think. Hazed reddy copper colour. Thick lasting pale beige foam. Looks well. Nose has caramel malts. Spicy fruity hop. Whiff of light sourness. Taste has a caramel sweetness first off with a punchy lasting hop bitterness. Lovely creamy mouthfeel with fine rolling carbonation. Nicely lingering bitterness to finish. Lovely stuff. SMOD do a lager better than most.
