American IPA - Mecca Grade Estate Malt is one in a series of pale, hoppy beers that feature malted barley exclusively from boutique maltsters across America. Each batch contains the same combination of hand-selected, American-grown hops, enabling differences in the malt to shine. This particular iteration of our American IPA utilizes malt exclusively from Mecca Grade Estate Malt, a family farm malthouse in Madras, Oregon. The singular terroir of the malthouse’s geography lends a complex, crisp character to its carefully cultivated offerings; a perfect component in the art of craft brewing. Like hops, malted barley conveys significant characteristics unique to each region and processing philosophy.

Canned 8/28/24, drunk 9/22/24, thanks to Chalumeaux. Heavily hazy, muted bronze-maize-brass. Large, frothy, off-white head. Why does this smell so much different than the other entries? Almost a buttery edge, which I almost never get from TH. I guess it's just max fruity esters, citrus, mango and pineapple, overripe, from lots of Citra. Chewy malts. And yeah, twangy, pineapple-forward hops with hugely estery yeast. The malt is lightly nutty, mostly full of honey and biscuit. But the hops are just too bitter, moderately piney and such, leading to a bit too much twang. Very unlike the earlier entries. Impressive that bookman also finds the butterscotch.

Pours a hazy, soft banana yellow, with smallish, though lasting, head. Aroma is a juicy combo of citrus and tropical fruit. Flavors follow, though there is an unfortunate butterscotch note running through the finish. Soft mouthfeel. Very mild level of hop bitterness in the finish.
