We hand selected the coffee beans for this brew, choosing a blend that reminds us of tangerine, candied orange and cooked peach – which we figured would go nicely in a big, bold, hoppy West Coast Pale.

A simple grist supports an assertive hop profile of tropical fruit and citrus, but it all comes together because of the coffee. We added whole coffee beans directly to the tank when the beer was cold conditioning, to impart a smooth, well rounded coffee character to the beer.

Keg at Fourpure. It pours hazy deep golden with a small white head. The aroma is fresh, soft, bright, orange citrus, tangerine, marmalade, orange jelly, muffin, earthy, toasty and fruity coffee vibes. The taste is crisp, say, bitter, earthy, definite coffee vibes, toasted nut, tangerine, orange marmalade, spice, fruit jelly, tang and pith with a dry, citrusy finish. Medium body and moderate, prickly carbonation. Good fun. Comes across very orangey with an interesting coffee vibe in the background.

Keg at the Euston Tap, West Lodge, 17/08/17. Lightly hazed golden amber with a decent off white cap. Nose is coffee grinds, straw, light bread, airy malts, mellow orange and citric waft. Taste comprises mellow tropical fruits, mango, much less coffee than the nose suggested, orange pith, straw, toasted bread. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with mellow hop bitterness. Tidy enough coffee pale.

Keg at the brewery. A dull orange gold coloured pour with a sticky white head. Aroma is earthy coffee, smoke, cascara, green hop, earth. Flavour is composed of woody coffee, green pepper, spicy hop, moderate base grains, semi sweet nutty malts. Palate is semi sweet, moderate carbonation, semi drying finish. Decent coffee character. Coffee works well with the hops. Interesting beer.
