Manchester's rain is infamous, but it's made us who we are. Not only did it help create our textile industry, but it's inspired some of our greatest names, from Lowry to Morrissey to Michael (our Head Brewer). JW Lees Stout is a dark and brooding ale that takes its inspiration - and its main ingredient - from those same northern skies. Made with pride using the finest northern water.

2/6/2022. Cask at the 35th Colchester Real Ale & Cider Festival. Pours black with a small frothy beige head. Aroma is nutty, roasted, cola, mushroom, plastic. Moderate sweetness, bitterness and body. Slightly oily, quite fizzy. Looked great but otherwise bit disappointing.

Cask @ Success To The Plough, Rochdale. Dark reddish-brown with a small head. Has slightly sweetened dark malts with a floralness to them rather than being roasted. It’s a very understated stout.

Cask @ Free Trade Inn, Newcastle [020518]
Black, ruby edges, dense tan head
Aroma of soft fruity sweet dark caramel malts, no roast
Taste of dark fruity malts, surprisingly fruity for a stout, soft roasted malts, some dark fairly sweet fruits
Palate - Light body, maybe a bit light in body, light sweet malt. Finish is fairly dry, soft dark fruits, some dry bitter roast comes out in the linger
Overall - Better than expected, bit different from the usual stouts
