A lager that's as rich as it is robust, and as dark as it is strong--does it get more German than that? Our version of the classic "Starkbier" is rightfully hefty, in both the ABV and mouthfeel departments.

Less fruity than your traditional English recipes, this German Porter is best enjoyed after a long, hard day of winter chores.. or, around a warm fire with friends and family this holiday season!

Can to becher pint glass.
Appearance: dark brown to black color with an eggshell white foamy head about three fingers high, this dissipated to leave some messy lace
Aroma: deep roasted malts, some herbal character, mellow earthiness, ashy/char tones, some cocoa powder, and delicate coffee tones
Flavor: balances between all the prior mentioned aromas semi-sweet and roasty, some toastiness, mild aftertaste of toast, earthiness and ash
Texture: almost medium bodied but just a touch under, semi-sessionable, finishes very dry and roasty
Overall: am I befuddled about what a German porter is? I would say so, though I guess this is just Urban Chestnut's version of a cross of a Munich dunkel and a porter, perhaps. However, I would want this again.

"German Porter" sounds like a marketing term to dumb down a classic German style for our unsophisticated American palates, but damned if it isn't a delicious beer regardless. Strong notes of mocha and bittersweet chocolate are backed up by hints of pumpernickel bread, toasted nuts, berry, and caramel, finished off by a firm roasted bitterness on the back end. Great pint.

German Porter. Never heard of a German Porter before. Wonder what it's supposed to be like. Anyway, this is dark malt, toast, molasses, and toffee. Flavors are similar to nose, with just right bittersweet. Good body and carbonation. Very good drinking.

16 oz can from Woodman's, Rockford. Frothy pour with some spongy tan foam. Beer is reddish brown. Toasty malt nose like most any porter. Taste is noticeably drier up front than any dark ales. Still a slight touch of fruitiness, too. Decent hybrid of lager ferment and porter style malt bill, though perhaps a little more hoppy than either style wants.

16 ounce can. Translucent dark brown color. Large frothy tan head. Stringy lacing. Rich, roasty malt aroma leans towards brown bread, tobacco leaves and Bakers Chocolate. Flavor upfront brings notes of bittersweet chocolate, crushed black peppercorns and dark chocolate. Medium bodied. Finishes dry and bitter. Quite tasty.

Pour is a black with a large bone white head. Aroma is a nice roasted and coffee malt combo. Flavor is a little thinner than the aroma let on but you still get some roasted malt and bitter bakers chocolate. They call this a Starkbier but I would say this is a cress between and porter and schwartzbier.
