Cask at The Wellington, Birmingham. Near black with hint of ruby, beige head. It's quite rich with notes of roasted malt, dark chocolate, liquorice, coffee. Smooth medium bodied and fuller than most sub 5% stouts. Good.

Handpull cask at the Salmon, Leicester. Light brown and a little bit translucent with a small uneven khaki head. Lots of liquorice in the aroma, with caramel chocolate and the littlest touch of yeast extract. I expected the taste to be super sweet but its actually very balanced, with a pronounced bitterness and a drying finish. Medium body with soft carbonation. This is special.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small tan head. The aroma has mainly malts – but with a hint of cheese as well ! In the mouth it is smooth and cream, with malts again prominent. Along with coffee and liquorice. After a while there are hints of ginger, and salted nuts. Some spicyness in the finish. This is pretty good – though I’m not sure about the “Foreign Extra” label.
