HOW IT TASTES
With a chestnut hue, this traditionally styled ale is predominately dry with a malty base. Bitter on the palate with slight undertones of cherries and plum.
Available throughout January and November.
HERITAGE
First brewed in the same year as the ‘Great Freeze’ in 1963, dark beers were very popular as they warmed the cockles of ones heart with their distinctive malty flavours.

Tried at the Horse and Groom Lincoln. Deep chestnut colour with a pale head. Aroma nutty malty and slightly musty sour. This wasn’t at its best.

Gravity cask at Pigs Ear 2017 - London. Pours deep brown with a small, bubbly off-white head. Good snout, dark malts, dried berries, hints of cocoa, licorice. Light to medium sweet flavour with some ashy roast, baking cocoa, more old berries and leather, some smoke. Medium bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Good balance at the close, with further restrained smoke, burnt marshmallows, leathery berries, baking cocoa. Pretty fun, pretty dynamic. I like it.

Cask at Cambridge Winter Beer Festival, Friday 20th January 2017 in company of FatPhil and Anna Pours chestnut in colour, malt driven, fruity with a slight dusty old leather and furniture feel about it, a little sweet but then dry. Quite liked it, nice to see Lacons recreating these lost styles. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3
