Bottle purchased in Edinburgh from a large shop on the Royal Mile I believe. This beer has a dark and opaque amber color and still a very large head even though it is well past its best by date. Simple malt aroma, say no smoke in the aroma or flavor. Light. Noble hops and a good malt base like a bitter. It is perfectly drinkable, bit the smoke is missing. I paired it with a dram of Talisker, which is both sweeter and more smokey.

Bottle from Ales by Mail, drunk at home. Sienna brown, hazy, a small khaki head and loadsa carbonation. Earthy hop scent with plum and toffee. A hint of the smoke somewhere in there. Smoke more pronounced in the taste, which starts sweet but quickly turns bitter from the complex hop. Bittersweet finish. Slight body without being too weak. Not overly exciting but pretty damn solid.

330ml bottle. Clear dark amber to brown colour with average, thick, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Nuttily malty aroma, hints of caramel, a touch of plum and raisin. Taste is bitter hoppy, minimally peaty smoky, a touch of toffee, raisin and plum. If anything, rather weakly smoky and boring overall.

Bottle from Drinkmonger. Clear amber body with a medium off-white head. Steady carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of toffee apple, steel, copper penny and rust... Not great. Flavour of metal, tea and bitter green apple. Thin body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. All I’m getting with this is metal.

Clear amber pint with a thick white head. Not much aroma. Sweet fruity taste. The malt and hop does come through but almost as an afterthought. It’s a sipper but not one I’d rush back to.

On cask at the Stockbridge Tap. Appearance - dark brown with a nice head. Nose - dried fruits, wholemeal bread and a tiny bit of smoke. Taste - fruitcake, gentle smoke again, burnt raisin note on the finish. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet crunchy texture and a long dry finish, bordering on astringent but good. Overall - yeah, interesting ale. Complex.
