Dark, hardy, thick, rich, roasted and chocolaty, this ale is amazingly smooth due to the generous addition of whole oats. Named for a friend of Iron Springs and easily the finest pedal steel player around, Barry Sless, this one is layered with flavors.

From bottle to pint glass. Aroma of strong chocolate. Alcohol present and sweet malt. Opaque with almost no head. Oily, inky color. Taste is oily, moderate low chocolate, alcohol warmth. Husky roast coffee characters. No real oat silkiness. Low carbonation. Finishes semi-dry. A beer that is searching too hard to find itself and is generally lacking.

On tap at Iron Springs brewpub during SF Beer Week, what a week! The nitro pour has a deep dark body with lasting mocha head of tight foam. The aroma has some roasted malts, some caramel malts and a good bit of burnt malty notes. The taste delivers dark roasted malts and then moves into a bit of roasted malt astringency as well as burnt malts that border on being sort of ashy. It gets even more burnt into the finish. Big roasty to burnt malt beer here. I like it.

Bomber thanks to Robert. Pours a jet black color with a medium brown head- looks awesome! A sweet nose of roast and char. A nice rich flavor with chocolate, milk, light bitter hops, roast, some metal, very smooth and my kind of beer. Very full flavored and a creamy palate. Awesome.

Roasted chocolate malt abounds. There’s excellent sweetness and some floral notes that may be the appearance of some hops. Chocolatey, roasty and sweet, the beer combines these elements excellently. Creamy feel.

Bomber. LIkely a gift from Marcus. Pours quite black with a large foamy tan head. Lots of chocolate in the aroma, with some dark toasted malt and coffee. Medium body with mild carbonation. Lots of toast and coffee in the flavor. Chocolate follows along. Nicely bitter. Excellent drink.
