750 ml corked and caged bottle into Trappist glass. Pours a dirty brown with no head, only a skiff and collar of off-white foam that disappears quickly. Aroma is apples, burnt popcorn, butter, cheese, licorice and molasses. Taste is mostly sweet with just a hint of sour and bitter. Finish is long and alcoholic. Carbonation is medium, body is medium-full. So far, the best by far I’ve had from this brewery.

Molasses and brown sugar nose. Cloudy brown, thick tan lacing head. Thinnish mouthfeel. Light on flavor, but balanced and somewhat rustic. Very subtle brown sugar and currant notes. Not as sweet as expected. Woody finish. Alcohol well concealed. Weak quad and overpriced. Lacks character. Thud.

Bottle: Poured a slightly cloudy deep brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of cookie dough malt with some light spicy yeast and some refreshing fruity ester. Taste is not as complex as expected but still very enjoyable with great notes of cookie dough malt with some refreshing fruity ester and a light spicy yeast. Body is a bit thin with good carbonation and no alcohol was apparent. I though it was a very enjoyable beer but still somewhat far from the behemoth that dominated the style.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of Grovlam. Slightly hazy reddish brown with a beige head leaving laces. Pruney aroma, a little licorice and overripe fruit. Quite full-bodied, plenty of dried and overripe fruit. Appears rather oxidized - in a good way. No bitterness but quite some alcohol showing in the aftertaste. 290509

Bottled. An unclear brown beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma has notes of sweet malt, caramel, and nuts. The falvor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and nuts as well as lighter notes of alcohol and bread, leading to a dry, alcoholic, and caramel finish.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Dark mahogany color; small creamy head. The caramel aroma comes out well, with chocolate, mature, with a touch of Madeira wine. Good body, the mouthfeel is quite smooth, with very good chocolate flavor, low bitterness; maybe something let me suspect the bottle is past its prime, but a very good one anyway.

From bottle, blind #3. Pours almost clear golden amber to hazzlenut brown with a small tan head. Roasted malt, dense, fruity and light oxidised touch. Sweet, caramel, roasted malt and slight metallic touch in the flavour. Dense caramelish and roasted into a light bitter and medium dry finish. Light liqourice touch too.

Pours ebony into a trappist glass. Off-white pancake head quickly recedes to pock surface. Pit fruit aromas. Sweet prunes and full raisins upfront turning a little sharp to a lasting dry malt finish.

750 ml bottle, corked & caged. Enjoyed in an Allagash glass. Brown/mahogany color with a multi-finger tan head. Aroma is dark and fruity, it reminds of Westy 8 - who knows. Rather less than medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is dark fruit, particularly dried plum, with raisin and dark, near toasted, malt. Now I know. Still it fits the style, and it drinks very well indeed. Finishes balanced, and there is an astringent effect on the rear sides of the tongue. My mouth revels in the flavors. Spice notes go in and out. It’s a great ale, and well worth ten bucks. Get it, if you can.
