Left Hand is best known for beers that are dark, drinkable and depart from the norm. Black IPA doesn’t disappoint. With the hop flavor and aroma of a West Coast IPA, complete with bright citrus and pine flavors, it’s balanced by restrained, roasty malt for an IPA that’s deliciously flavorful and deceptively dark.

Pours black with a lingering tan head. It smells of dark roast malt and piney hops. The moderately bitter flavor has dark roast malt, chocolate, and piney hops. Medium bodied. Very good.

Charred oak, toasted pecan, pine. Black, medium tan head. Grapefruit, pine, charred oak. Kibble and charcoal finish. Medium body, easy carbonation. Really fouls up the palate. True to style.

12 ounce can from Beer Run, 5/23/23. BLACK IPAS NEED TO COME BACK!!!! Dark brown large tan head, good retention. Aroma of roast, green hops. A bit of dank. Taste is roast, chocolate, pine, green hops. Earthy. Nice.

16 oz can shared by tfontana. Aroma is a tad odd. Ashy burnt malt. It follows into the flavor. Mild pine cone and old roasted grain. Meh.

Can (best by 5/5/23) pour from The Beer Store, Salem. It's a dark, cola, brown with thin cap of beige head with fair retention and no lacing. Aroma is mix of pine and caramel/sweet malts. Taste follows aroma. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, always nice to have this style--and it's been a while--but, while the requisite elements are there, I wish the piney bite struck a greater contrast with the malts.

Pour is a black with a large tan foamy head. Aroma is a decent enough piney hop. Flavor is again a lot of pine hop but there is also some charred malt and even some bitterness on the back end. Not a beer that is going to wow you but everything your looking for in a black IPA is here.

Pretty good black IPA; doesn’t present the richness or depth of flavor of a truly great black IPA, but does offer black coffee, unsweetened cocoa, and roast notes highlighted by grapefruit and pine. Good enough.
