Imperial Stout

Blacker than night, Ink stains the soul. An indelible chasm of roasted malt, plunging through note of coffee, dark fruit, and milk chocolate. Gaze long into the darkness and the darkness will gaze back into you.

16 ounce can from Tavour. Jet black pour. Large, dense tan head. Darkly roasted malt aroma hints at treacle and dark chocolate. Flavors of robust roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and black currants. A bit of black licorice and burnt sugar as well. Smooth on palate. Dry bitter finish. Great clingy lacing from first sip to last.

Sampled on draft at Tapped this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy brown head that left good lacing. The aroma was anise, chocolate, alcohol and wood. The flavor was bitter with floral hops, anise, alcohol, chocolate, wood and a hint of port wine. Very long finish. Moderately full bodied and smooth.

Keg at BD AGM. It pours jet black with a small beige head. The aroma is rich, sweet, toasted malt, chocolate cake, treacle, earthy, roast and coffee. The taste is bitter - sweet, rich roasted malt, chewy malt, chocolate cake, slick, chocolate ice cream, mild warming alcohol with a slick, roasty finish. Full body and fine carbonation. Slick and sweet. Drinks very well.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of molasses, smoke, raisin, plum, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of molasses, smoke, raisin, plum, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate herbal/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, light molasses/smoke, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with an awesome roasted bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from bitter roast. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is extremely well hidden; only a very mild warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding imperial stout! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the ABV. Very rich and complex on English malt flavors; with balancing hop and restrained yeast character. A highly enjoyable offering.

Tap at Gambrinus 7th anniversary. Pours a deep brown to black with a small bit of head that dissipates quickly. Roasted malt nose with some prune and rich cacao nib notes. Good roasted flavor, more cacao nib and a bit of milk chocolate as it opens up. A little thin on the body. Lingering chocolately finish.
