Draft. A dark brown beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of over ripe fruits, straw, caramel, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, over ripe fruits, and malt, leading to a dry finish.

Collab of Anspach & Hobday with BBP, draught at BBP’s brewpub in Brussels. "Belgian black" ale (whatever that means - ’black’ beers are not traditional in Belgium apart from old stout variations) aged on Chardonnay barrels. Loosely structured, somewhat ’milky’ but thick, pale greyish beige head with moussy edge, very dark hazy bronze-ish chestnut brown, almost looking black in general appearance. Unusual, liqueurish and perfumey bouquet of maple syrup, sweet cider, cranberry juice, lychee ’jenever’, caramel, apple, ruby port, haemoglobin-like iron, butterscotch candy, horse steak, liquorish. Very strongly candied sweet onset, candied cherry with hints of banana and sweet blue plum, brown sugar sweetness sticking a bit to the mouth and teeth, softish carbo, resinous and slick mouthfeel, a tad metallic with a thick, round, caramel sweet core, vinous, leading to a long, aromatic finish, warm alcohol but no harsh wryness, drying oaky tannins with vanilla-ish effect, very light spicy hop touch somewhere but primarily sweet and very liqueurish, with a sweet white dessert wine effect. A liquid ’Belgian praline’ and in that sense only showing certain Belgian aspects (think sweet dubbels and quads), interesting as a slow sipper with a whole new flavor dimension added by the wine barrel ageing, but low in drinkability due to its overt sweetness and alcoholic finish, in fact a bit over the top for me. This beer will certainly divide opinions.
