Red Kite is deep red in colour and is made using a traditional Mild Ale malt variety that was a staple of bitters and milds brewed in the Midland in the 1950’s.

With the introduction of the Osprey Project at nearby Rutland Water, the area has become a Mecca for Bird of Prey spotters. In recent years the number of Red Kite sightings in the area has steadily increased to such an extent that there are now Hides established on the nearby river Gwash for the sole purpose of watching these magnificent birds in action. Introduced in 2014, Red Kite, like the bird is steadily increasing its sightings in the area too!

Cask at the Briar Rose, Birmingham. My first Rutland beer and a complete set of English regions to boot. Amber with small tight off white head. Malty with biscuit and a slight zesty orange. Pleasant if a bit basic.

Cask at the White Swan JDW, Solihull. Poured a clear copper colour with a lasting frothy white head. The aroma is malt, red berry fruits. The flavour is moderate to light sweet, with a smooth, earthy, plum fruity, dry, hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Nice enough, but won’t win any awards.

Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours the classic “bitter brown” with a small white head and good lacing. There’s a distinct fruity aroma about this one, with some hints of apples. It the mouth it is sweet and watery, but flavours do come through. Malts and autumn fruits at the start, with some traces of hops later on. Finish is slightly dry. Pleasant but innocuous.
