Enkel, Dutch for the word single. Also sometimes known as Patersbier and intended to be kept for the monks in a trappist brewery/monastery but not usually for sale to the public. The most delicate and approachable iteration of all the abbey beers.

A hop forward, dry belgian beer perfectly sessionable and suited for drinking on its own or at the table. We used Nugget and a new variety, HBC 586 a hop with more linalool than any other. An oil with a hugely lemon/citrus aroma. We have also dosed this beer with Lemon Verbena and coriander to push the linalool content even higher and add a delicate but interesting twist on this classic beer style.

Vintage can from Lowcostbeer. It pours crystal clear yellow - blonde with a thick, fluffy white head. The aroma is bright and zingy, lemon - lime, gooseberry, melon, sherbet, cracker, sponge cake, biscuit and hay. The taste is crisp, dry, fairly light, straw, hay, bread, biscuit, hay, touch of green apple, melon, lemon - lime, hay and a splash of white wine with a dryish, fairly short finish. Light body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Fairly light, but quaffable with some interesting nuances.

Can from Low Cost Beer. Appearance - a touch lively. Yellow and cloudy with a foamy white head. Nose - candied lemon, light sweet spice. Taste - more lemon, some cucumber and salad, then sweet spice lurking again. Palate - light bodied, dry, lightly tangy finish. Overall - the yeast is doing a lot of the work in this beer.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from Budgens of Islington. Pours clear yellow with a fluffy, white foam topping. Lightly sweet with notes of flakes wheat, lemon peel, soft yeast, straw. Light bodied with active carbonation. Pale biscuity finish, subtle lemony tang, mellow bitter straw, more wheat accents. Dry drinkable stuff.
