Light in alcohol content but dark in colour, our Scottish Light (or 60/-) delivers a rich and rewarding experience. A slow and low fermentation keeps things clean and crisp, and allows the array of delicate malt flavours to shine. Toasty rather than roasty notes are to the fore, alongside caramel, toffee, a gentle orchard fruitiness from restrained esters, and a hint of peat smoke. A balancing bitterness prevents the finish from being cloying but there’s enough residual sweetness to leave a satisfying mouthfeel that belies the low ABV. This under-represented style works equally well in summer or winter and ages well, making it a great choice for the fridge and the cellar.

Can online from Cork & Cask, Edinburgh. Pours clear ruby brown with a beige cap. Aroma: caramel, a little nutty. Taste: light sweet & bitter, light caramel, red fruits, hints of smoke. Light body with light carbonation. Not a style I see around too often. Flavoursome for 3%.

Can from Westhill Service Station. It pours deep lightly hazy reddish - brown with a bubbly beige head. The aroma is earthy roast, toasty, umami, puff of peat smoke, brown bread, malt loaf, touch of toffee, raisin, fruit cake and wood. The taste is dry upfront, toothy, brown bready malts, earthy roast, toasted malt loaf, dried fruits, fruit cake, raisin, mellow smoke, peat, wood and a touch of spice with a drying, bready finish. Light+ body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. This has to be the best Scottish light made. Has a complexity one would never expect from the style. Great stuff. Excellent with an dram.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - brown with amber chinks. Nice cloud like fawn head. Nose - hazelnuts and toffee, quite like what you'd expect from a Scotch Ale or a Brown Ale. Taste - honeycomb, light toffee again. Burnt toffee with a hint of dark chocolate. Palate - light to almost medium bodied (surprising considering ABV) and fairly good finish. Overall - this really packs a flavour punch despite teh low ABV.
