Brewed with English Maris Otter malted barley, and a combination of English hops and American hops (Goldings & Cascade). Our aim was to create a true IPA. Strong, and heavily hopped, so that as in the old days, it might survive the ship cruise to India. Despite its strongly evident bitterness, its fruity, floral characteristics balance this beer perfectly.

The ‘Indian Empire’ is often used to refer to the British Raj, or crown, in India between 1858 and 1947. Due to the intense heat, stationed officers were unable to drink their usual tipples of whiskies. A long drink was invented that combined Single Malt, Mango Juice, and Ginger Beer. These days this long drink is also named Indian Empire, and may be found in select cocktail bars.

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a clear light yellow golden colour with a short-lived, frothy white head. The aroma is yeasty, woody hops. The flavour is over moderate bitter, with a smooth, yeasty, gluey, big woody hop bitter palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask at Imperial, Worcester. Pours a hazy golden amber with minimal white head. There’s a vaguely antiseptic aroma – but it’s a pleasant one ! In the mouth it is sweet and uicy with summer fruits to the fore. After a while traditional hops start to assert themselves, plus pine, grains and a hint of malts. Finish is slightly bitter. This is a reasonable beer – though I would class it more as a “hoppy golden ale” than a straight IPA.

Handpull cask at the Kings Head, Leicester. Light to mid-gold with a thin white head. It's got an aroma of hay, ammonia and TCP. Sounds less pleasant than it is. Sweet taste with the sour medicinal notes typical of the English IPA. Long ammonia-laden finish. A bit too old-fashioned for the likes of me but it's a decent beer overall.

7th March 2015: hand-pulled pint in The Pheasant Inn, Wellington while judging a home baked Bread Roll competition. Part of the ’Charter Day’ celebrations. Good golden hue to the body, a full white pillow on top. Hop lead, middle and finish: tropical, floral notes in the nose, but bitter in the taste. A good, honest brew with a malty undertone that prevents the hops running away with the flavourings.
