Borefts IX. Day 1. Keg. Hazy amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Smooth and mildly sweet malts. Little dried fruits and citric peel. Spicy dried fruits. Not bad but fairly obvious alcohol.

The fourth in this series of barrel aged barleywines with mythological sea monster names - in this case referring to Greek mythology, no doubt the next one will be called Charybdis... Aged on Westport whisky barrels, which, if I am correctly informed, is very close or even near-identical to Glenmorangie. Draught at Estaminet De Brouwerij, shared by my girlfriend. Creamy, egg-white, slowly opening but otherwise remarkably stable, densely moussy head over a hazy orange-hued peach blonde beer. Surprisingly sweet and desserty, delicate aroma, totally different from the three previous ones: yellow raspberry candy, rosehip tea, orange water, amaretto, pancakes, lots of ripe melon and meloenjenever, vanilla-like oak, marmalade, mandarins. Sweet onset, lots of melon and guava, hint of banana, sourish apple-like undercurrent; medium carbonated with a thick vinous mouthfeel, as can be expected from a 14% ABV barleywine style ale. Somewhat soapy, caramelly malt sweet body, yellow raisin, honey liqueur and melon candy effect lingering well into the finish, where some vanilla-tinged oak accents add colour and complexity, before a very hot, sweet liqueur-like alcohol effect sets in - with a whisky flavour to it of course, but I would not have recognized it as something Glenmorangie-like if tasted blind, as it bathes in residual sweetness. Floral hop notes and some woody tannins are present as well. Wow, this is something else: I honestly wasn't impressed with Leviathan and The Kraken since both were extremely boozy and solventy, to the point where I had to pour part of them away; with that in mind, I never would have thought this fourth one would tick all the boxes... This is an intense, rather 'clean', very desserty and surprisingly elegant 'digestif' of a barleywine - and by far the greatest achievement by d'Oude Maalderij so far if you ask me. I'm looking forward to Charybdis too, now. Update: had this from a bottle a week later, and in that form, it did show a very heavy solvent- and methylated spirit-like character like Leviathan and Kraken from the bottle did... Clearly this series works better fresh from tap than from bottle, point off for the bottled version, which was, frankly, rather harsh, though still more enjoyable than Leviathan and Kraken were. This rating is to be seen as an average of both.

At Brugs Bierfestival, 3 February 2018. Cheers to Anke, Ian, Kevin & Jerre!
Hazy amber with a lasting, small, off-white head. Aroma of bourbon, peated whisky, apple, calvados, hops, ripe banana, fruit liqueur. Tastes light to medium fruity sweet and light to medium spicy/hoppy bitter; alcoholic, whisky-like finish, remaining slightly hoppy. Full body, oily texture, soft to flat carbonation. Good, but perhaps a bit overdone?

Bottle 500ml. @ 9th. BBF 2017 [ 9th Borefts Beer Festival 2017 ] @ Brouwerij de Molen, Bodegraven, Netherlands. [ As d'Oude Maalderij Scylla ].Unclear medium amber colour with a small, fizzy, virtually none lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, sweet malt, caramel, dried fruit, alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet with a long duration, dried fruit, prunes, sweet malt, caramel, alcohol - boozy. IMO. quit unbalanced. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is moderate alcoholic. [20170922] 7-2-6-3-12

Stark karamelliger Antrunk. Alkoholisch, süßlich getreidig, aufdringlich. Trotz des Alkohols gut trinkbar, könnte aromatischer sein. 10/7/8/7//7
