Bandstand Barleywine is a full-bodied beer with massive caramel malt notes reminiscent of burnt sugar and toffee. The beer was aged in bourbon barrels for several months, allowing it to pick up vanilla and toasted coconut aromas and flavors, while mellowing its hoppy notes. With an alc. by vol. of 13.5%, this beer is perfect for cellaring.

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 11/30/2009 as Oaked Barleywine. Clear copper amber body with a medium frothy off-white head. Sweet caramel aroma with lots of floral/citrus hops. Sweet caramel flavor with lots of citrus/floral hops and a very faint oak background and a hint of vanilla. Medium full body with moderate carbonation.

Bottle courtesy of Secret Santa (probably hand-bottled) : Poured a amber color ale with a small foamy head with some retention. Taste of medium sweet malt with light bourbon notes with some very faint notes of hops. Taste is also a well balanced mix between some c-hops with notes of bourbon and vanilla and light sweet toffee malt. Body is a bit light with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not the most ground breaking barley wine but well done nonetheless.

Growler from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy brownish orange color with a large creamy offwhite head. Good head retention and lacing. The aroma is majorly citrusy. I had a bag of clementines next to the beer and I could barely tell the difference. Now, the clementines are long gone and there is still a strong tangerine note as well as some lime and herbal notes as well as a faint hint of bourbon in the background. The taste is big citrus hops as well as some peppery and herbal notes, buttered toast, wood, bourbon. Medium bodied. The flavors don’t blend well but overall this is interesting.
