Yesssss! Who doesn’t love a piece of apfelstrudel? Vanilla, whipped cream, raisins and apple all poured into this 11% Imperial doppelbock.

Ever wanted to make like Alice and enter a wonderland of your own? Well, to that we say ‘drink me’. This doppelbock is your golden ticket to a prelapsarian forest full of apples. Well… we did already pick those apples and baked it into a creamy Austrian pastry with vanilla, raisins and cinnamon. We used the best german malts and hops to get down this rabbit hole. Drink this portion and you’ll soon be consulting caterpillars, organizing mad tea parties and playing croquet with the queen. Yes, wonderland is yours for the taking. Just don’t lose your head down there.

Bottle (1 of 3) that I picked up from www.drankgigant.nl Webshop, Vlissingen, Netherlands and consumed at home Friday 14th May 2021 we had homemade Chicken Schnitzels and Potato Wedges for tea. Listening to Tom Ravenscroft on 6Music. Pours dark brown a light haze, off white heading towards light cappuccino coloured head. Nice toasted malts, dark molasses a little black treacle and perhaps some cinammon and or nutmeg on the nose. Pleasantly warming with, soft mouthfeel, good carbonation. In the mouth the spices were a little more apparent with nutmeg and cinnamon combining with the molasses and giving what is a pretty authentic interpretation of both a good Doppelbock and a Apple Strudel, *btw we had this with an apple strudel sat outside by the wood oven.

330ml bottle. Hazy, dark brown colour with small to average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, dark beige head. Rich, sweet-ish, malty and fruity aroma, notes of caramel, milk chocolate, lots of vanilla, some toffee, hints of baked apple, dried fruit, whiffs of honey, lactose. Taste is sweet malty, slightly fruity and spicy, lots of vanilla, notes of caramel, some dark caramel, toffee, hints of baked apple, slightly citrusy fruity hoppy hints of orange peel, mandarine, a touch of honey, lactose. Creamy to viscous texture, smooth and soft palate, slightly cloying, fine and soft carbonation. Quite sweet vanilla bomb, minimally artificial, but very tasty - good.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BB 01.10.2029, from Alko, 20201121) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized, fizzy and lightly brown. Aroma had toasted malts, molasses and sweet dark chocolate. Palate was full bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were molasses, nutmeg, sweetness, alcohols, malts, cinnamon and bitterness. Aftertaste had toasty notes, sweetness, liquorice and bitterness. Complex, boozy but also a tasty brew.

Bottle from Deconinck. Pours hazy dark brown with a lasting, small, foamy, tan head. Aroma of cinnamon, raisin, dark toffee, cake, red apple, Pomme d'Amour, candied fig, pear syrup, vague calvados. Taste has sweet raisin, red apple & fig wrapped in thick toffee- & cake-like maltiness, touch of vanilla going into spicy cinnamon, clove & some herbal notes. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, 'spiced' cake element returning as well as the sweet toffee & apple, topped off almost literally with warming calvados-like alcohol. Medium to full body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation. Very full, tasty, elegant actually, a 'Pastry Bock' if there ever was one.
