One of our favorite malt and hop driven lager styles and more traditionally referred to as polotmavý ležák, or half-dark lager, in Czechia. Shadows in Bloom is the perfect intersection of deeply flavorful malt and spicy Czech Saaz hops. A single decoction mash step develops flavors of rich whole wheat and seeded bread crust with hints of desiccated currants and burnt sugar. The saturated hop character helps balance but also enhances the malt as well. Don’t be fooled by the dark amber color and multitude of flavors, Shadows in Bloom is only 5% alcohol by volume and retains very high drinkability.

On tap at Oakland CHoP. Aroma is malt forward with nice notes of toasted bread and crackers, medium light caramel notes and hints of dark fruits and sugar. Hints of herbal, woodyl hop notes and hints of alcohol. Pours a very clear, amber color with auburn hues and a small, thick, pillowy, slightly tan head that recedes steadily to a small film that lingers. Flavor has a light sweetness with notes of toasted bread and crackers as well as hints of dried dark fruits and slightly burnt caramel. Medium bitterness and light alcohol notes. Faint herbal, woody hop notes. Mouthfeel is light bodied and a bit crisp and dry with medium carbonation. Low astringency and faint alcohol warmth. Overall, a solid amber lager. Really nice, fairly complex malt character with balanced bitterness. Hop profile is light but complimentary and alcohol is well hidden. Very clean and easy drinking.
