A German classic with a Scottish twist. An ‘Alt’, as it is often called, means ‘old’ and refers to a style which pre-dates lagers. It is a dark, malty beer with a decent dose of German hops. Düsseldorf in the west of Germany is home to the style where it’s still made in brewpubs in the old town and beyond.

Bottle at the level 42 tasting V1.5 05/04/16, thanks to Bro Pie. Hazed amber orange with a decnent off white cap. Nose is bitter orange, earthy fruit, light medicinal, spice. Taste comprises light spice, toffee, earthy fruit, grain, light bread. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Adequate.

Bottle shared at level 42 Canary wharf tasting. 5/4/2016. Many thanks to Paul for this one. Hazed reddy amber coloured pour with a lasting thin off white head. Aroma is tangy green apple, semi sweet nutty grains little musty, orange rind. Flavour is composed of tangy, apple, raisin, nutty malts, grainy. Palate is grainy, highish carbonation. Drying finish. Not very alt.

Bottle shared on the 42nd floor - many thanks to Paul. Pours mostly clear orange-amber with a frothy, off-white head. There’s a little plastic in the nose, some lightly toasted grains, bread, earth. Light sweet flavor with grainy toast, orange peel, light bitter earth, husky grains. Light bodied with average carbonation. Decent balance on the finish, more grain, citrus peel, light earth. Not bad overall.

Bottle at level 42. It pours clear deep brown with thick beige head. The aroma is malt - driven, brown bread, toasted nuts, damp leaves, caramel and full menthol. The taste is bitter, wood, brown bread, toasted nuts, twig, chewy malt, dark fruits and a touch of spice with a drying finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Decent enough for style, but far from exciting.

500ml bottle. Hazy, brown with a big white head that mostly fizzed away. Burnt toffee aroma, maybe with coffee hints. Taste is toffee, chocolate, a little coffee. Very nice, especially as it warmed

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - deep brown with a nice sheen. Almost olive like. Generous fluffy head. Nose - toasted bread, some toffee and just a suggestion of citrus. Taste - burnt bread, raisins. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - good beer, quite hefty compared to most alt styles I think.

500ml bottle from drinkmonger, at jeevan’s pours clear amber brown, thin white head. Aromas of malt, toffee, light herbal hops, light mineral - almost metallic - note. Taste is light sweet, some cold black tea, more herbal notes. Medium body, light sweet finish.

Bottle. Murky amber/brown body with a thick beige head. Lively carbonation. Excellent lacing. Aroma of nuts, lightly roasted malt, bran flakes and a hint of chocolate. Flavour of toffee, wood and earthy hops with a dry finish. Medium body with a smooth texture. Light fizz. A solid beer. I think it would be even better on cask.
