A German classic with a Scottish twist. An ‘Alt’, as it is often called, means ‘old’ and refers to a style which pre-dates lagers. It is a dark, malty beer with a decent dose of German hops. Düsseldorf in the west of Germany is home to the style where it’s still made in brewpubs in the old town and beyond.

Hops: Admiral, Perle, Tettnager

Gravicask at the 23rd St Albans Beer & Cider Festival. Muddy orange coloured body, filmy layer dotted spots on the glass. Earthy malts and wheat on the nose. Grain malty flavours, hints of ripe fruits. Doughy on the swallow. So and so. (Shared with Finn, 27.09.2018).

Third of a cask pint at the Scottish Real Ale Festival in Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange on 7th July 2017. Poured slightly misty, the colour and dark amber with a red hue, head was off-white. Decent go at an Altbier, had the malty backbone and hop bitterness most Dusseldorf brews have and I really enjoyed it.
