Foamy beige head left a spotty cover on a dark brown still body. Liquorice, malt & toffee aroma. Medium bodied, soft & smooth with a cloying back. Malt, sweet, berry, sarsaparilla & toffee tastes with a lightly hopped tangy citrus finish. Nicely balanced.

Near-opaque but clear dark red-brown beer, thick head. Light aroma of malty chocolate. Flavour has sweet, toasty malt, chocolate, a little dried fruit, maybe a little grassy hop too but just a dash. Decent body to it. Nothing remarkable but extremely sessionable.

Bottle from Beer Ambleside. Appearance - deep brown to black and opaque. Fawn head. Nose - black jacks, light smoke. Taste - molasses, liquorice and more smoke. Palate - close to medium bodied. Dry, roasty middle and finish. Overall - not sure it's a black IPA, but it is a good dry stout.

Cask in Coopers Tavern, Burton-on-Trent Pours a very dark red brown with no head (served by gravity). Nose holds liquorice and roast malts. In the mouth there are dark fruits and hazelnuts, together with roast malts and some hoppiness. Finish is bitter – but then some sweetness comes through. Not bad at all.
