A Porter to suit the warmer months, this brown ale has gentle chocolate and roast flavours paired with a bright fruity zing from the hops. A refreshing dark beer.

We created the malt bill for this beer with the summer in mind, so we toned down the really roasty flavours and upped the more refreshing malts like Maris Otter Pale malt and Munich. To this we added Crystal, Chocolate (pale and dark) and black malt.

Our Malt comes from Warminster Maltings, a traditional Victorian floor malt house just down the road in Wiltshire. They produce the finest malts available and are a thoroughly nice bunch.

The staple hop of this beer is one of our favourite British hops called Bramling Cross, famous for imparting notes of blackcurrant and gooseberry. We paired this with a lovely hop from across the pond called Amarillo, which we added late in the boil and dry hopped to give those lovely orangey and earthy aromas. The idea was to give this dark drink some fresh, bright, hoppyness.

Fermented with a blend of Safale S-04 and US-05

Bottle enjoyed on a night out in Bristol back in 2013. Poured mid to dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma of chocolate, moderate roasted malt, dark fruits and berries. Medium sweetness, bitterness and body. Oily texture, average carbonation. Big fruity finish. Enjoyed this.

Bottle at Three Tuns. It pours deep ruby with a medium beige head. The nose is full of berry, light jamminess, wood, roaste malt and burnt toast. The taste is bitter-sweet, pine, varnish, blackcurrant, bramble, jam, wood and leather with a dry, berry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Balanced and very drinkable. Really rather good.

On gravity at the Volunteer, Bristol 25/05/2013. Near black with a decent, off-white head. Big, blackcurrant fruit aroma, with some roasted malts and a touch of leafy hop. Flavour had some solid malts, more fruit and a lingering dryish finish, with a touch of hop. Very good.
