Alright, so this summer was a bit of a bust. We never like to admit it, but the promise of sun-soaked beer gardens went a little unfulfilled this lap around the sun, so why not embrace the changing of the seasons with a nod to the Autumnal weather in the post, and with it the styles of beer suited to the time of the year; step forward, the Polly’s hoppy stout.

Taking a trip over to the dark side but not forgetting our roots, we’re huge fans of recreating the robust, bold hoppy US stouts that we ourselves grew up drinking and always relish an opportunity to pay homage to the breweries without whom we wouldn’t exist today.

No messing around with dry hops on this one, this is all about the malt and hot side hops; Talus brings a bright, floral hoppiness that forms the undercurrent of this beer, but it’s within the malt bill that A Modern Classic sings – Chocolate, DRC, Crystal Extra Dark, and Black malts join our usual Extra Pale base to create a rich, full bodied US style stout.

On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours almost black with a medium sized tan head and good lacing. Roast malts are dominant in the aroma, which also has chocolate and a hint of nuts. In the mouth it is quite sweet with a creamy texture. Flavours of honey and roasted maltsplus hints of ginger. Later on there are a few hops and traces of treacle leading to a slightly dry and spicy finish. This is decent, plenty of bite to it but still very drinkable.
