Made with malted rye and USA hops, takes its name from the date the Quoyloo School – now site of the Orkney Brewery – was opened. A strong, full bodied auburn beer, 1878 is characterised by big fruit and spice hop flavours, which are balanced by a soft and sweet malt background.

Cask at the Green Man, JDW - London. Pours clear, rich gold with a staunch, frothy off-white head. Ripe citrus and berries in the nose, some faintly astringent leaves. Medium sweet flavor, light toasty bread, some citric tang. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly sticky sweet finish, some bread, ripe berries, some more citric tang, mild booze, toast. A bit muddled and messy overall. Not a joy to drink.

Cask @ Nairn Beer Festival [290313]
Golden, clear, bubbly head
Aroma - Toffee caramel, soft cereal malts
Taste of caramel, soft toffee, cereals, hint of dark honey, some biscuit, unusual caramel cereal taste here, hint of butterscotch, some nutty grassy hops, dab of caramel drenched breakfast cereal, not sure about this
Palate - Thin to medium body, bit thin, fairly oily. Finish as main flavour, dryish, bitter linger
Overall - Came across as a bit odd and muddled to me - tbh it’s just a bit above average
