This is Double Liberty IPA and yes it’s an imperial version of Anchor Liberty Ale. Double Liberty uses double the amount of whole cone Cascade hops to get to double the IBUs of Liberty Ale as well.

Bottle from new Craftissimo at home. Clear copper amber pour with minimal but sticky head. Aroma is really unusual - almost like a lemony cleaning detergent, but in a nice way. Lemon and pine, nicely mixed. Taste is very much like a bigger Liberty Ale, understandably. Deep pine resin bitterness, but this is more balanced with a big cereal malt. Some good booziness too. Really nice DIPA.

Draft at Sunset Grill and Tap. Clear copper gold color, lasting head with retention. Aroma is herbal, mild fruit. The flavor leans on the sweeter side with it becoming mildy syrupy in texture. It shows a light amount of floral bitterness that lingers slighter after the swallow. The malt nearly overpowers the hops and the alcohol really isn’t hidden. About middle of the road.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run. Hazy golden, large foamy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of piney, resin hops and pale malt. The taste is citrus, piney, resin hops, pale malt. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, mild lingering bitterness.

Pours orange with a small head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, pine and resin. Taste is sweet, resinous and piney with some biscuit, caramel and toffee. Finish is sweet, stuffy and resinous with some grass and toffee. Stuffy and unbalanced.

35.5 cl bottle @ hotel room, San Diego. Aroma has toffee typical to Anchor beers. Flavour has toffee, grapefruit and rather strong mineral notes. Quite what it promises to be; a stronger liberty ale.

Draft. Rich amber beer with a dark cream head. Light grapefruit aroma. Caramel and grapefruit flavor with light pine. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Caramel and grapefruit linger with pine.

Pours deep gold into a tulip. White head recedes to hug rim. Dark resin and sweet apricot aromas. Sweet hot toffee and caramel upfront turning to thick sweet tropical fruit in the lasting hot finish.

Bottle from Whole Foods in Davis, CA. Pours orange tinged gold with a creamy whitish head. Aroma is sort of spicy, floral, lightly grapefruit. Very different. Near full bodied. It’s almost creamy in texture. Flavor is bitter, mild hop burn, grapefruit, floral, and there’s spice aspects. There’s a lot of flavor here, and it’s presented in a new to me way. Really tasty. Really interesting.

On tap at PIB 2015, pours a clear golden with a large white head. Aroma brings out herbal hops and biscuity malt - pretty simple. Flavour is well-balanced, with astringent piney hops and crisp biscuity malt. Solid stuff.
