Yo Winter Brew is our Winter warmer. Yo is short for the nickname given to the Aztec God Xipe Totec. His nickname was Yohuallahunatzin relating to his proclivity toward Aztec beer consumption. He was also called Yoalli Tlauana meaning night drinker. The brewers of Yo could easily have this nickname too.

Batch 1471 barleywine. Nose is toffee, figs, and a flowery note. Clear rust with a small lightly lacing beige head. Flavor is lightly contrasting sweet and bitter with toffee and gruit

Tap, batch 1305, 7.6% abv. Pours clear ruby amber with a medium creamy tan head that slowly dissipates with nice lacing. Aroma is strong caramel, toffee and notes of cotton candy. Flavor is sweet caramel, toffee, nutmeg and some other spice notes.

Sampled on tap at Green Dragon, pours an opaque, murky red / amber with zero head. Aroma of toffee, dark fruits and candied sugar - quite sweet. Flavour of toffee, dark fruits, caramel and candied sugar - quite sweet but not cloying. Solid.

From tap at Toronado, Barley Wine Fest 2010. Pours clear and golden deep amber with a small tan head. Aroma is wooden and dry malty. Flat malty and vague fruity flavoured. Light bitterness coming through. A bit ordinary.

Sampled at Toronado 2009 Barleywine Festival. Pours hazy copper with thin off white head. The aroma has a bit of a cherry cough syrup sensation then it moves toward figs and a bit of sweet malts. The taste is fruity to start but lacks much in the way of depth or rich dark fruitiness I’d expect for a beer at a Barleywine Fest. Seems pretty darn dry and thin in body from beginning to end.

Draft. Amber color with an off-white head. Sweet malt aroma and flavors. A bit of vanilla. Fairly clean and easy to drink, but not outstanding.
